Nomvula..... NO NO NO!!!

Went out for a family do to the Artscape last night. A night of "high culture". My folks, my brother and his wife, my sister, my wife and me. All the okes were hoping to score brownie points of note. I mean, this is the ballet, after all. A night of dance, to the music of Freshly Ground.
I like Freshly Ground, so I thought that at least I'd be able to enjoy the music, if the dancing wasn't my thing. Boy, was it not my thing. My boet, Dad and I went to the bar at the interval. And didn't go back. It wasn't cheap, at R100 a ticket, but I'd have gladly paid them another R100 to stop.
It got me thinking that there are a lot of people who will applaud absolutely anything. If you're thinking of going, don't. It's kak.

Billy Joel

So it's been announced that a big name is to come to Cape Town in November. I heard the announcement on KFM. Well, not really, the announcement was made after I got to my desk last Thursday, but I heard the preamble.
Nick Marais, the KFM breakfast DJ (who's apparently "strong") had commented that the biggest act yet to hit Cape Town would be announced later in the show. He went on to say that unless you'd seen the Rolling Stones or Queen, this was the biggest act you'd ever see.
Naturally, I was curious - could it be U2? The Chilis? Pink Floyd? Ge Korsten?
Then a colleague came in and said that she'd heard the announcement. It's Billy Joel. Billy Joel? Some of you may remember him - he was quite big in the 80s. He made a name for himself by marrying Christie Brinckley and singing about it (Uptown Girl).
Look, I'm not knocking Billy Joel (not much anyway) but he's hardly a big name now. I mean, his concert isn't even at a big venue - it's at the Bellville Velodrome. A place that seats only 5000.
Interestingly, on Monday, Nick Marais said that there were still some tickets available. And Robbie Williams sold out Green Point Stadium in a couple of hours last year.
Still, if you want to get your folks some tickets to old Billy, there might still be some available.

Just heard some pretty awful news which appears to be confirmed on Keo. Apparently Andre Venter suffered some sort of bone marrow infection after contracting 'flu.
For the moment he is semi-paralysed - from the waist down. Hopefully he can make a full recovery. This man is a Bok legend and was with the Boks during that fantastic winning streak including th 1998 Tri-Nations crown.
Get well soon.

Resurgent Province?
Tue 18 Jul 2006, 09:54 0 Comment(s) Report AbuseIgnoring what happened early in the afternoon on Saturday, let's move to some of the happenings later in the day.
What a performance by Province, hey? It's too early in the season to say with complete conviction, but this team is beginning to look to me like quite a potent force in domestic rugby. Yes there was the hiccup against the Sharks in the opener, reminiscent of the way the Stormers finished their games during the Super14, but then what a turnaround the following week up at Loftus. Didn't hear too much from old Gé during the course of that game did we.
And then they followed that up with a fantastic performance against the Cheetahs on Saturday. So that's a win against the "best side in SA rugby" followed by a win against the Currie Cup champs the week later.

I'm excited about this Province side. I think that the back row, led by the man we all know should currently be in New Zealand, has come from nowhere to be probably the best combination of all the provinces.
The backline, too, is quick, unpredictable, and skillful. Aplon tackles well above his weight and Pietersen and Seconds are both players who make things happen when they get the ball. So Pietersen is concussed after that outrageous hit from du Toit (how did he stay on the pitch after that?) - let's hope he gets well soon. Also it sounds like Brits is out for a couple of months - that's bad news. Brits carries the ball a long way, and runs like a centre.
I don't know about you, but I'm not too sure I want the Boks back in this side when the Tri-Nations is over!
